What is low mood?

In order to decide whether you are experiencing low mood, please read through the following list of symptoms. Does it describe how you feel, think and behave at this point in time?

Feelings and emotions:

  • feeling sad, upset, numb
  • losing interest in doing things
  • crying a lot
  • feeling alone even if you are in company

Physical signs:

  • feeling tired, lack of energy
  • sleep problems
  • changes in weight and appetite

  • losing confidence in yourself
  • hopelessness
  • poor memory and concentration

  • can’t be bothered to do everyday tasks
  • difficulty making decisions
  • not doing things you used to enjoy
  • cutting yourself off from other people
  • thoughts of suicide

However, there are times when depression is a normal and natural response to life events, such as bereavements, redundancy, abusive relationships, ending a relationship etc. It is often inadvisable to try and treat this depression with CBT but sometimes counselling can provide an emotional support when going through these difficult changes.

Please note: If you are not sure whether this course is suitable for you, or if you feel that your low mood is part of a more complicated set of circumstances, then you may benefit from an assessment with us to see if we can offer more appropriate assistance. You can arrange an assessment by phoning us on 0300 300 0834.

What will the course involve?

· understand how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works and how you can use it to alleviate the symptoms of low mood,

· learn techniques to change the behaviours and thoughts that are unhelpful and keep your low mood going

· There will be things to practice between sessions: the more you put in – the more you will get out.
